An amendment to the Social Security financing bill for 2021 provides for the duration of leave for the adoption of a child from ten to sixteen weeks. The government has already proposed doubling the length of paternity leave after birth.

“The first 1,000 days of life is a subject to which the President of the Republic is extremely attached,” insists the government. And to go in this direction, the executive therefore proposes to extend the leave in the event of the adoption of a child.

An amendment was tabled on October 16 in the Social Security financing bill (PLFSS) for 2021. “The present amendment aims to extend the leave for adoption for adopting families who have no children or a dependent child and thus increase it from ten weeks, a period currently considered insufficient, to sixteen weeks”, he said. detailed.

Leave for both parents

Currently, the length of adoption leave varies depending on the number of adopted children and the number of dependent children, and whether or not it is shared between the adoptive parents. It is thus ten weeks “if the employee adopts a child and, following this adoption, has 1 or 2 dependent children”. If, after the adoption, the employee has at least 3 dependent children, this leave is extended to 18 weeks.

The leave can be taken by only one or both adoptive parents. If both parents take it, its duration will then be shared between them, and increased by 11 days.

The renunciation of paternity leave is rarely motivated by loss of income

In September, the government had already decided to extend the duration of classic paternity leave from July 1, 2021, by increasing it to 28 days, instead of 14 today. It was, however, much less than the nine weeks recommended by the report of the “first 1,000 days of the child” chaired by neuropsychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik.

For adoption leave, the government is this time going further than the recommendations of the report, which proposed to extend it to twelve weeks. “Adopting a child also requires taking time to welcome it in the best conditions”, justifies the government in its amendment.

This six-week extension represents a cost of “about three million euros”, says the government, taking into account “1,600 adoptions per year”.
